How do you decide the price of a painting?

In my case, I chose a living painter whose work I really admire. With some self-criticism, I decided that my paintings were worth about half of his.

I don’t know if that’s a truly valid parameter. But it felt honest to me.

Then I had a simple thought: I would let reality speak.

If I couldn’t sell any paintings, the price was probably too high for the market at that moment. If they sold immediately, maybe I was asking too little. If they sold from time to time, I was probably somewhere close to the right balance.

And that’s exactly what happened. And it’s still happening.

The price of art is not an absolute truth. It’s a slow conversation between me and the people who look at my work.

And some conversations can last for years.
