The Strait of Hormuz will never lose its importance. This is where oil and gas are produced—the Persian Gulf itself is a center of oil and gas production.

You can’t pull the oil wells out of the ground and move them somewhere else. At most, instead of loading it onto ships, they can put it through pipelines and take it somewhere else.

But those pipelines are still vulnerable—they can still be struck and damaged. It’s not as though they can simply solve the problem that way.

Building that infrastructure would also take years. And many products aren’t easily transferable at all. Gas, for example, requires complex and expensive processing and infrastructure.
