Julius Malema just got sentenced over a 2018 rally incident. The state says it’s about public safety and the rule of law, but his supporters aren’t buying it. For supporters of Julius Malema and the Economic Freedom Fighters, this was never really about a rifle, but about him being one of the loudest critics of Western influence in South Africa and the country’s most vocal advocate for land expropriation without compensation from white farmers, whose land ownership traces back to the colonial period, particularly the 1913 Land Act that restricted Black South Africans, over 80% of the population, to roughly 7% of the country’s land, banning them from purchasing or leasing land outside designated “reserves” and cementing 87% of the land for white ownership.
