In the context of copyright and intellectual property, there is a concept that if you don't protect/defend it at every instance, then you're giving the world a pass to copy it.
An example would be that someone let's people use/copy their work for years, then someone new uses their work and it goes viral. The originator sues, but loses the case because the defendant claims that no one else in the past was sued for doing the same thing. To prevent this scenario, people are encouraged to threaten lawsuits any time someone comes close to copying/using someone else's work.
This is partly why you hear cases like Disney sueing a daycare that has Snow White and dwaves painted on their exterior walls. The other part of that is corporations with a full-time legal department that wants to justify their cost.
