On this day in 1986, Steve Winwood went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the single “Higher Love” (August 30) https://youtu.be/k9olaIio3l8 Featuring backing vocals by Chaka Khan, Winwood went all the way to #1 on the US Billboard charts with this one, his first US #1.

The previous best for the ex-Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith member, was 1980’s “While You See a Chance” which climbed to #7.

“Higher Love” won two Grammys in 1987: Record Of The Year (beating Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love") and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The single written by Winwood and Will Jennings from the LP “Back In The High Life” also made #1 in Canada, and was a Top 10 hit in Australia.

It was also his highest-charting solo hit in the UK, peaking at #13.

Chaka Khan appears in the video, as does Nile Rodgers, who plays guitar with the backing band.
