The US hasn't been a capitalist system for a long time.
Do you mean that in the US the means of production are not the property of private owners who are not necessarily the workers?
I agree that it is not a free market, but I think it is still very much capitalist.
As for my metaphor, I can add that capitalism is both the track and the run. Reaching the finish line ends (or freeze) the run, it does not mean that the track has disappeared.
