Bunch of other things to consider here. China has been building reserves for years and electrifying distribution. Much of the electrification is hydro and solar, as well as vast coal implementation. Lowers reliance on diesel. They certainly lack crude and the reservoirs in places like bohai are not huge (I personally added a few million barrels there many moons ago), but they're developing and improving drilling techniques specifically targeting unconventional and gas plays in the western regions. They've been very focussed on energy diversification for years. It's something people seem to gloss over
