Well.. smartphones only truly appeared circa 2009 with the iphone.
Before that we had PDA running Windows CE, which wasn't all that bad. Except that there was no WiFi and zero access to the internet.
Still great stuff for listening music, playing games (mostly gameboy emulators) and things like excel/word came as default on PDA of that day.
In 2003 this was my PDA, a Toshiba e330

Someone was modifying back then to run Linux. Sadly didn't finished that goal, nowadays with Claude and such it would be up and running Linux within 24 hours.
