Thank you for your response. I appreciate you clarifying your intent. To be clear, my original post was to understand how people in the community view this kind of activity. Nothing vague about that. I want to understand whether this is a community I want to continue investing my time in. If the majority supports this behavior, I would rather step away. The only way to get a sense of that is to ask openly. A post can be clear and still be misread when it isn’t fully engaged with. There’s no need to revisit or debate what was said in the roundtable discussion. People can listen and draw their own conclusions, and hopefully they will, because it was an important conversation. Thank you again for taking the time to respond. I’ll leave it there.

Hi Silvie, Right now I’m checking out the V4V Roundtable, and it seems that you have interpreted my post as support for this behavior, which is both surprising and disappointing. As Matt points out, I want to understand people's opinions about this. It is much easier to get an honest response by asking a fairly neutral question. When I saw the pirate upload I’m commenting on, I was genuinely disappointed to see this happening in the Nostr space. I wanted to get a better understanding of whether I have been wasting my time investing so much in this community since I joined last year. I have no interest in building my presence in a piracy space. If you had read my post carefully, it should have been clear that I do not support this behavior. A few of my comments would have made that even clearer. Also, when I put a heart and a zap on your "Hard pass" repost two days ago, it should have been a pretty strong indication that we are on the same page. I have been an active part of the international music scene since the '90s, with an extensive catalog and tours around the world. I have witnessed the dark side of being ripped off and watched much of the business collapse firsthand. That makes it not only disappointing, but genuinely hurtful, to be labeled as supportive of something I have been struggling with for the past 25 years. Thank you for reading. I have a feeling most apps work better on phone. For example, I really want to love Fountain. But on PC it's really annoying to stream a sequence of songs. Before switching to the next, it (often) starts playing a second of the beginning of the current song before switching. Totally ruins the experience. Same on phone if used through a browser. I just now tried the Fountain app for the first time, and this actually seems to work (but it took me half a year to realize since I never use phone 😅, or am interested in doing so). However, the app doesn't seem to show the albums, EPs, etc, just the tracks in a long list (unless I miss something), which is really a shame. I am fully aware that most people live their lives with a phone in their hand. But I'm sure I'm not the only one using PC (Windows and Linux). I would promote Fountain even harder if they had a smooth playback.

I never found Bitcoin interesting until I realized that the fiat world is finished. Yes, Monero might be a better alternative, but since BTC is more widespread, and now with Lightning, it makes a lot of sense that this is the focus for now. Building a new space for music on the foundation of the economy of the future feels much more intriguing than continuing to focus all energy on something that is bound to fail. Even if Spotify survives for more than a couple of years, it will most likely become a CBDC platform. Removing middlemen is just as important as building on sound money. For too long, the hard labor of creative people has been extracted by those who contributed very little, but injected themselves into positions of power that allowed them to control the entire industry, mainly to serve themselves and their shareholders. With them out of the picture, we have a chance to see artists thrive and earn a decent living from doing what they’re meant to do, without needing a side hustle just to pay the bills. The closest we currently get to a social app with music in focus is Nostria, which is tightly integrated with native Nostr music while also including a whole lot more. No support for RSS Podcasting 2.0 yet, though. It also has a very simple community feature that most people seem to overlook. But you’re right. It would be nice to see something more like Reddit or old-school web forums integrated into an app. Discussions like this are much better suited to that kind of environment than as comments under a Nostr post.

It’s probably much easier to promote a specific app (e.g. Fountain, Stablecraft, etc.) than the broader concept (i.e. v4v), especially when onboarding new people. But I’m not sure which app that would be. There are several pretty good options, but people coming from the legacy world expect Spotify-level quality and functionality. And honestly, I don’t think we’re quite there yet. Or maybe we are, and I’ve just missed it. Right now, it seems like people find this space when they’re ready for it. Onboarding new people means trying to convince those who haven’t yet arrived at those conclusions on their own. The people who discover this space organically are usually motivated enough to find the imperfections charming. Others are harder to convince. If they get a bad first impression, it’s much harder to get a second chance later, even after things have improved.

Totally agree with Matt. The choice to make a product Open Source, Value For Value, etc. should of course belong to the creator. The musical idea itself is the lyrics, melody, chords, and possibly the arrangement. That idea can then be turned into a product through the labor of performance, recording, production, mixing, mastering, and so on. The discussion around ideas being free is an interesting one, and definitely worth having. I also have a lot to say about PROs and the various (copy)right organizations. In many ways, they feel outdated. I suspect composers, writers, and others who are not necessarily seeking the spotlight themselves may have a lot of value to contribute to this discussion. Our world would definitely be a bleaker place without them.

I’d say the listener experience is the most important thing to make smooth and enjoyable. The edgy branding becomes the reward, making listeners feel special for seeking music outside the mainstream and becoming part of something sincere and meaningful. And that’s ultimately what attracts the mainstream too. You can see the same pattern in major cities. Creatives, artists, musicians, etc., tend to gather in certain areas, usually because that’s where they can still afford to live and hang out. Over time, they bring authenticity and make those places special. Then everyone else wants to be there too. It becomes the hip place to be, prices go up, the creatives get pushed out, and the cycle repeats. But this time, we’d never have to leave. Unless something goes terribly wrong 🎸

Another huge improvement would be establishing a tight relationship with Nostria (the only other app I know of offering similar functionality) and agreeing on which standards need to be fulfilled for publishing tracks and albums. At the moment, there’s still some inconsistency. I don’t know which app is most accurate, but it’s my impression that uploads from Nostria don’t function equally well in Sunami, and vice versa. For example, my first Sunami uploads didn’t show which album they belonged to on Nostria (in track view). Another example is that albums uploaded through Nostria show no artist name in Sunami. Also, tracks uploaded in Nostria don't show in the Tracks tab in Sunami (only in the Releases tab). I’m sure there are other small details that could use some consistency as well, but I can’t remember them off the top of my head. Since you and nostr:nprofile1qqsp0c5gn7aqzqsaqj9p8lgt5yy26vwrsvnzj4rqcg0xn3pl4ra729g4a0ds9 of nostr:nprofile1qqsvdmpe8kqwk8rydgjxkyml80d5f89268n2h0lhfgkjt3wnx655ulsr8r4un are the pioneers in this area, whatever standards you agree on will more or less become the foundation future apps follow. One really cool feature I’d love to see across all music apps is gapless playback, like Spotify has. When I make an album or EP, the pauses between songs aren’t intended to be random. Some tracks are designed to transition seamlessly into the next without the listener noticing. The same applies to live albums. Neither native Nostr music apps nor RSS-based music apps (such as Fountain) handle this particularly well right now. I can definitely see the challenge, since the files are scattered across different servers and relays. It would require preloading the upcoming track in the background while the current one is still playing. The app that figures out how to solve this properly will probably become my go-to app 🙂 🎸 PS. I would suggest not making a one-click download feature. Some artists sell their audio files and it would probably not feel great for them.

Exactly. Right now it’s mainly builders boosting builders (which is an awesome attitude, and a big part of why I love Nostr), plus a few others. I have no idea how many artists are in a similar situation, but most of the artists I know on legacy platforms, who own their material and already receive a decent amount of streams (like me, or far more), will be incredibly difficult to convince to consider the v4v space unless they see more direct rewards than “just” independence. There’s a pretty steep barrier to entry if they have to learn everything we’re discussing right now, like self-hosting and running nodes. Most people don’t have that kind of time to spare unless they see fairly immediate benefits. I agree that custodial wallets are a temporary solution, but I don’t feel comfortable if their websites use terms like “identity verification” or “KYC.” That's the exact mindset of the old world. However, I firmly believe we’ll figure it out by working together and sharing ideas.

"Convenience" was always the carrot that led us astray in the legacy world. It's actually a bit odd that none of the NWC alternatives support keysend. I'm no expert on the topic, but from what I can gather, it should be a fairly simple addition to the wallets that already exist, and an important one. Maybe the real issue is fear of being attacked by the legacy world, because with integrated keysend, we start becoming uncomfortably liberated. I have no idea, but very little surprises me these days. Another topic that would be interesting to discuss is how to make the v4v model work better. As you know very well, it doesn't work great for music. Yes, we're still early, but I have a feeling that more time alone won't solve the challenge. At the moment, it's largely musicians supporting musicians. 🙂 If we want to bring more artists over from "the other side," it would help tremendously if we could also become a real alternative for people who are already getting streams from places like Spotify. Everyone knows they pay almost nothing, but I still make more from Spotify in one day than I do in the v4v space in a month. I'm still investing a lot of time here because it makes so much sense, and I firmly believe this is where the future is headed. However, that belief alone won't make it an easy sell. The solution is probably within our reach, even if it isn't clearly visible yet. It's great that this panel discussion will shine a light on some of our current challenges so the bright minds in this space can come together and brainstorm.

Totally agree that it would be great to see more artists here. I think the most convincing argument we have right now is success stories. I still hope the v4v model proves itself to be more beneficial than the paywalled legacy solutions. The closer we get to that reality, the easier it will become to onboard outsiders. I have a hunch that long-term artistic integrity is not as convincing to most people as immediate personal gain (except for a few weirdos such as myself). And realistically, we probably won't reach many established acts anytime soon, since most of them don't even control their own material due to contractual obligations that prevent them from testing the waters in the valueverse. Maybe it would make sense to start collecting and sharing success stories? Those could also point us toward which artists would be most interested in joining this space 🎸

Pretty sure Aria has world wide distribution, but probably not in as many shops as the more mainstream brands. Bit of an outsider, just like me 🙂🎸
