There are versions of NIP 17 that use alias keys (other npubs) as the receive address for DMs for those looking at the extra privacy. But all of them make the interoperability between clients 10x harder, since we don't have a time chain to lock the lastest alias key each user in the chat group is using. Unfortunately, there is no good solution for it in any protocol without a central server or a central blockchain.
