I guess that sounds a bit like Nostr.

nostr:nprofile1qqs8msutuusu385l6wpdzf2473d2zlh750yfayfseqwryr6mfazqvmgk5rncz was kind enough to let me know that footnotes are not part of original markdown, but are an extension, so I shouldn't expect them to render properly in very basic parsers.

That said, I think the guidance I found to use "[^1]" for the reference and "[^1]:" for the content of the footnote looks better than whatever Nextcloud did, even if it doesn't get rendered correctly.
