In 1970, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis pulled off one of the strangest feats in sporting history. He threw a no-hitter while tripping on LSD.
Ellis had mistakenly taken acid believing it was still Thursday, only to discover he was scheduled to pitch that evening. He rushed to the stadium and somehow led the Pirates to a 2–0 victory.
His perception was completely distorted. “The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes. Sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t.”
It wasn't pretty. Ellis walked eight batters and hit another. But nobody got a hit.
So how did someone hallucinating manage such an elite physical performance?
One possibility is a bizarre, high-risk version of flow. Elite athletes can struggle when the conscious mind interferes with movements that years of practice have made automatic. Perhaps Ellis’s mind was so occupied that his deeply ingrained pitching mechanics simply took over.
Definitely not a training method.
But it raises a fascinating question. How much better might we perform when the anxious, doubting mind gets out of the way?
