The only sane way to handle the encryption requirement with “an unknown future OS” is to make it a bootable media and eat the space decrease.

  1. I would use one of those encryption schemes that allow for booting into a decoy environment using an alternative password
  2. Inside the encrypted container I would use ZFS because of checksumming and snapshot replication stuff (never trust a single media)
