I've been thinking about self-hosting (more) AI models, but I am increasingly of the opinion that the opposite of the You own nothing and you'll be happy. mantra is not You will own everything and you'll be happy.

Owning things carries a cost, so everyone has to be selective about what he chooses to own. Everyone who owns one thing is also choosing to not-own something else.

In regards to AI, I see more and more people getting so bogged down in purchasing and maintaining all of their models and infra, that they have effectively ceased to use them for productive purposes. They own the models primarily for the sake of owning them, and for talking about them with their friends. Rather than for the sake of using them to accomplish some particular task.

Stamp collecting, but make it AI.

Meanwhile, everything they own is rapidly becoming obsolete or oversized for the task, as the models become more efficient and effective.
