Yeah the smoker is harder to control temps.
They key concept of slowly raising the internal meat temperature to cook it without burning, can be replicated in many appliances.
You can get a very similar outcome using an oven set to about 90⁰C.
My current favourite smoker is a bullet smoker I purchased for $50 second hand.
