I get the challenge. I also read Ligotti's The Conspiracy Against the Human Race when it came out, which took much from Zapffe, and also inspired True Detective. Ligotti isn't wrong. BUT... One of my favorites along these lines that captures my optimism, if you are unfamiliar, is by Gary Snyder. I write/work for that time when we meet in the future.
For the Children Gary Snyder
The rising hills, the slopes, of statistics lie before us. The steep climb of everything, going up, up, as we all go down.
In the next century or the one beyond that, they say, are valleys, pastures, we can meet there in peace if we make it.
