Your liberties can't be taken away from you because they are god given and eternal. People just choose to comply because the fear the real or imagined repercussions. To a big degree it's a choice.

It does indeed make it less bad because not only is it a personal way out but it also gives you the opportunity to be an example for others.

If you've watched the recent legislation carefully you would see that the vast majority of it relates to big tech on the operator side. Neither e2e encryption per se nor self hosting are criminalized. Code is still free.

As legacy big tech enters it's winter it's just natural that the governments (all of them) claim additional controls in an attempt to "freeze the situation".

This is why I personally prefer to view these developments as an emergent process and surf them instead of fighting windmills.
