When you get time, look into a Pi or similar. Not so much to use as a PC, but to play with SSH and managing things remotely with no GUI at all. You can learn about SSH keys and passwordless login, and run something that you can access on your local network. When you get a rough idea, it's just a short hop to doing it on a VPS and running a web-accessible service. You'll continue learning and getting comfortable with the terminal, also. It's a small time/money investment for a huge knowledge/experience return.
