This is the decline of the democratic republic and the rise of oligarchy at work on the mentality of the populace: removing their sense of agency and making them fatalistic and therefore compliant.

The oligarchs aren't the only parasites, but they are the proto-parasites. As long as there are oligarchs, the people will be economically beaten down into slavery, and their minds will change to make that inevitability more tolerable. Humans cannot stand the cognitive dissonance of unrequited hope for long and sink into resignation.

The right is so morally bankrupt that it has been reduced to telling us that we just need to lick the toes of the better oligarchs, and that will improve it all.
