Anecdotally, I must have been quite deficient.

quite possibly. depends on where you live and what your diet was like before, and where the food came from. some places have very little magnesium in the soil, so nothing gets into the food chain.

but too much magnesium will start with digestive issues and if you keep overdosing you can cause heart issues.

probably suggest getting some bloods done soon and see what your levels are like now.
