I recently wrote about how everyone in the USSR admired Koh-i-Noor pencils. I decided to buy their modern premium pencil (both today and in the past that model is Toison d’Or). And here’s the result.

On the left is cedar; on the right is what Koh-i-Noor calls cedar. What it’s actually called in reality, I have no idea; people on forums suggested it might be jelutong. Personally, I admit it might actually be cedar - but the kind of cedar that might as well be jelutong.

As for the graphite core, artists would probably judge it better. I can only compare the writing quality with a school Staedtler pencil and with Faber-Castell 9000.

Verdict: crap.

Were people in the USSR mistaken? I don’t know. Maybe things really were better back then.
