In 1990, Cameroon reached the WC quarter finals with mostly local amateur players. Eight years before that, in 1982, they exited in the first round without a single defeat, even drawing against Italy, who later won the tournament.

The double nationality was all about giving foreign players, who couldn't make it into their national team, the ability to play big tournaments, at the expense of the local players. This has completely destroyed all incentives to develop the African football, as it's much easier to recruit from European football academies than building local professional leagues. In order to compete, African talents now have to go abroad (Europe) to play professionally, as the local leagues become increasingly irrelevant.
