I think the thing that is confusing you is that you think of housing as a consumption good, in line with "much of the things in our daily life". But housing is real estate, i.e. land, and therefore a hard asset more akin to gold, Bitcoin, shares, or a factory.

The difference is that it's the only hard asset that humans cannot live without, as we are physical beings who have to occupy some geographic space. We are compelled to occupy land, so it is a cost we can't escape.
