Exactly, I only use 8 tracks for my recordings. I record the drums directly in stereo (or even mono, like on my last single, "Do You Love Me?"). I play everything myself; it's truly pure DIY. 😅 But I'm still learning all the time, it's a process. My setup is based on an old 32-channel Tascam console and a Fostex R8 tape machine. My modest outboard gear consists of a few compressors, preamps, and (multi-)effects units. Almost everything is secondhand and probably low- to mid-budget range. But it's great to see that you also want to integrate a mixer in your setup! I think you'll have a lot of fun with it once you're familiar with everything. Drum miking is a big topic. I try to be flexible with it. Sometimes even one microphone is enough for my needs. 😬
