I checked out Joseph Mellon's razor. What makes it unusual is that not only the baseplate is open, but the top cap as well. According to the inventor, this design was supposed to retain water and work like a capillary reservoir. I'm not sure about the water, but it definitely holds lather.

The original has been out of production for decades, but the Chinese brand Yaqi sells modern reproductions of the design. RazoRock does the same in Canada, and Phoenix Shaving in the US.
