This cottage is the sole surviving structure from the Battle of Culloden in 1746 - the last pitched battle on British soil.

It stood at the northern edge of the government lines and was used as a field hospital for the Duke of Cumberland’s wounded soldiers during the slaughter.

Despite the devastation surrounding it, including the burning of nearby barns, the cottage survived and remained inhabited by the same family until 1912, eventually being restored to its 18th century appearance.
