Yes, exactly. I am using the term "knowledge" as a general term for all types of information that has causal power, and thus can replicate itself. By causal power, I mean that you can put these 1s and 0s into a computer, and they will reliably cause a computer to effect the physical world around it. One of the things the computer could do is replicate those bits into other media or computers. So for example the number PI, has "managed to replicate itself" into your brain and mine, into math books, computers, etc. But I want to put that into a different category, and call that mathematical knowledge. A similar category I would call aesthetic knowledge. Ava, I know you are a lover of music, so in that realm we have patterns of notes and chords that we find "pleasing", therefore we sing or play them, and thus they replicate to other people (computers). And when we write a new song, we explore this territory, to find what "works" and what doesn't. I think that Aesthetics is vastly understudied and misunderstood compared to the "hard sciences", so we are stuck in saying simplistic things such as "That sounds good." or "That doesn't work." We struggle to express what we know is there, just like early mathematicians struggled to express what they didn't have good explanations for. I believe that when Mozart, Beethoven or McCartney struggled and sweated over a line of music to get it "just so", they really were struggling. There was a truth to the matter they were trying to get at. A real artist knows that something literally can be good or not. It isn't just an opinion. Like a scientist, the artist is looking for something that is true, that they don't already know or has already been discovered. And then, when the artist creates a work that has novel beauty, and our brain experiences that work for the first time, we are wowed. That experience is our brain learning something new, and it is pleasurable because we are programmed to learn. It is like reading a detective novel and having that "Ahhhhh" moment when everything falls into place. It's like when learning about Darwin's theory of evolution and so much about life on earth falls into place. It's why young people will often like music that older, more experienced lovers of music find simple or boring. The music can be beautiful, but the more experienced listener already has that knowledge in their head. They have heard that beautiful chord progression many times before, so nothing new is getting created in that listeners brain. They aren't learning anything new. But for the young listener, they need to learn this and go through it, and for them, it is highly enjoyable as it was for you and me early on. The arts generally though have failed artists in not supplying them a deeper knowledge of the field, or even more importantly, that there is something to actually be right or wrong about.

I believe there are types of beauty that objectively exist. Things that contain objective beauty, tend to replicate themselves more than things that don't. https://blossom.laantungir.net/9e1a34d64ee5c1155d2a73204604f66d80a0e37177cbc243b0315b0a43f374eb.png This is a clear definition. There is no "woo-woo" involved here. No relativistic "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". When I learned this about #aesthetics, it was revolutionary for me. I realized the importance of art, and how it was on a similar footing with science, mathematics, and philosophy. There are truths to aesthetics in our universe that we can uncover. We never say "Physics is in the eye of the beholder." or "Math is in the eye of the beholder." Likewise, we should never slander #art in the same way.  Some patterns of bits contain beauty, and some don't. The ones that do will tend to persist in our universe. They will reliably copy themselves, from brain to brain, from computer to computer, or from painting to camera.  All you have to so is visit a museum, and you can see beauty replicating itself. nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq8ky23e5mjlkle2fq88ztsx8c672tmwcj3p5zempltwry8fcmufeqqsv5zpzk2ksw05fslpycvpxgmetvwuqass50nsklsvl2qcequjkwpcrxa84k

I think if I were to start a school, I would have the students create an anonymous #NOSTR account, and have them start posting about what interests them. -- Make it an anonymous account. Anonymity keeps it low stakes and allows you to distance yourself from your beliefs. You don't have to worry about seeming dumb to your friends or family. -- If nobody is following you (and nobody will be in the beginning), just think of it as a private journal. People keep journals and don't care if anyone ever reads it. There is no reason why you need people to follow you. Then the entire purpose of the school is to help the students progress and get better at what interests them. Unlike a traditional school, the teacher is not put first. Unlike a neo-traditional school, the student is not put first. In this school, the work is put first. The student is subservient to the work. The chisel shapes the marble, but "chisel to marble" also shapes the student. The teacher is there to help the student learn the process of removing errors in their thinking. nostr:note135yuzg3rlggjmrjg56wh83spxm557llr2m03dqnev4rd48e2mlysnh4z2k

I'm fine with people preferring face to face interactions. I will push back on the idea of "what it is to be human." I am software. Everything about me that I consider "me" is software. You could systematically remove every part of my body and replace it with other parts, and as long as my software program in my head kept running, it would still be me. We are digital creatures in commodity hardware, even if I am fond of the hardware, which I often am.

We are not on social media enough. Social Media is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Ever. Full stop. But it is constantly maligned. https://blossom.laantungir.net/eedecee9ceef30152ad326849f1fad12a333dd973c27a35116e1a3f9b485a743.jpg Even on NOSTR social media is seen in a somewhat negative light. Moral virtue is expressed as "go out and touch grass". A thought experiment - give 100 people this social media challenge:  "Every day for a year, post on social media about your problems, or your society's problems, along with what you believe are the solutions. Post on politics, science, religion, morality, whatever is important to you. Consider and respond to any serious replies. Be earnest." Now at the end of the year, compare that group of 100 people, to a control group. Almost certainly the 100 who posted on social media would have advanced their thinking far more from where it was. They would have had to make explicit in their mind their beliefs, and then put them up for critique. Their knowledge would have grown. They would look back at their early beliefs as relatively uninformed.  If I was asked to spend time with either group after the year, I would choose the 100 people who posted on social media. Is social media perfect? No. That is why we #NOSTR. Would the people posting have been happy the whole time doing it? Almost certainly not, but I'm not always happy at the gym either. Karl Popper taught us how we create knowledge: 1. Start with a problem 2. Conjecture solutions. 3. Criticize those solutions. 4. Go with the best solution until we can conjecture a better one. The social media challenge I proposed, is virtually this exact method. I have been thinking that the traditional education system is doomed, but was not sure what would replace it. Now I am thinking that it is simply social media. I love NOSTR.

It is interesting to note that almost all examples we have of societies going extinct are because they didn't create enough knowledge fast enough, not that they had too much. Native American tribes would have been much better off if they had more knowledge about gunpowder and especially smallpox. It was this lack of knowledge that doomed them. The Greenland Norse needed to know about insulating clothing and how to hunt marine mammals. The Anasazi about soil conservation. The Easter Islanders about sustainable forestry. Given that almost all examples of situations we want to avoid are situations where we don't have enough knowledge, I think this is a strong indication that we need to build AGIs and the new knowledge that comes with them as quickly as possible. The danger lies in not having the knowledge needed to save ourselves.  GM *P(Doom) is the probability that AIs kill us all any given year.

I think it's actually the reverse. Just like we have universal computers (Turing complete), we will some day have universal constructors - machines that can build anything physical allowed by the laws of physics. At that point, the only thing that becomes valuable (or even interesting) is new knowledge - which is just a type of code.

The signature replaces the handshake for authentication; silent-drop + cheap-first validation (~2 µs before ~50 µs verify). We can also obviously requre PoW for rate limiting if it becomes an issue. The fingerprint problem is won by having no handshake at all. A TLS handshake might cost the victim 35ms, plus round trips. That is maybe 700-4000x more expensive. The flood problem is handled by making every forged packet cost the attacker more than it costs us — and by never letting a forged packet create state, a response, or a signal. Bottom line, it's really cheap to check the incoming packet and do nothing compared to handshaking. But we will see.

# NOSTR over single packet UDP ## TLDR Send a Nostr event as one-way UDP packet instead of using TCP. This one-way send is very censorship resistant compared to the alternatives. I currently have it implemented on my relay and you can test it now on the command line using nc and nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6's nak. ''' nak event -k 1 -c "I don't shake hands, because Ewwwwww!" | nc -u -w1 laantungir.net 443 ''' ## The problem: As far as I know, every circumvention tool [VPN, Tor, Shadowsocks, obfs4] has a handshake. You start off messaging the server, and the server replies before you can send your information. National firewalls detect those handshakes, fingerprint them, probe the handshake, then block the IP or take other action. The handshake is a vulnerability. Every tool plays cat-and-mouse obfuscating it. https://blossom.laantungir.net/b63479f895a207fccfbac9323ac7a4bd47cbc20e43ebfcd60f3c54e41bfb1d1d.jpg For example Tor bridges are vulnerable to active probing. The adversary connects to a suspected bridge and sends data. If the server responds with a valid obfs4 handshake, the adversary knows it is a bridge. This is how many Tor bridges get blocked. ## The idea: UDP Nostr eliminates the handshake entirely. The Nostr event is already signed before it touches the network. The signature replaces the handshake. There is no SYN, no TLS ClientHello, no SNI, no key exchange, no recognizable structure — just a blob of bytes in one UDP packet under 1472 bytes. The adversary can send a probe, but the relay doesn't respond at all. No handshake to detect. No TCP RST to inject (UDP has no RST). No DNS to poison. ## Live example — full zero-config round-trip My relay has fully implemented UDP Nostr. https://blossom.laantungir.net/5b1c5fc4ddf89b4aec123c7a2a5934e9a22c3271fa641b071cc8f7740a342bbd.png **command line** ```bash # Console 1 - Set up a live watch for the nak default events on the relay nak req -a 79be667ef9dcbbac55a06295ce870b07029bfcdb2dce28d959f2815b16f81798 --stream laantungir.net/relay # Console 2 - Send via UDP (no --sec needed, nak uses the default key) nak event -k 1 -c "Hello!" | nc -u -w1 laantungir.net 443 ``` **Python:** ```python import socket, sys s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_DGRAM) s.sendto(sys.stdin.buffer.read(), (sys.argv[1], int(sys.argv[2]))) ``` ```bash nak event -k 1 -c "Hello!" | python3 send.py laantungir.net 443 ``` **JavaScript (Node.js):** ```javascript const dgram = require("dgram"), s = dgram.createSocket("udp4"); process.stdin.on("data", b => s.send(b, +process.argv[3], process.argv[2])); ``` ```bash nak event -k 1 -c "Hello!" | node send.js laantungir.net 443 ``` ## An example of largest kind:1 that fits in one packet With the default nak key, empty tags, and a 10-digit timestamp, the Nostr JSON overhead (structural syntax + hex-expanded id/pubkey/sig) is ~340 bytes, leaving **~1132 characters of content** in the 1472-byte UDP budget. Below is an illustrative event at full capacity — its single-line JSON form is exactly 1472 bytes on the wire, one Ethernet frame, unfragmented. (The `id` and `sig` shown are placeholders for readability; a real event carries a SHA-256 `id` and valid Schnorr `sig`.) ```json {"id":"426462725f7061636b65745f626f756e646172795f746573745f303030303030", "pubkey":"79be667ef9dcbbac55a06295ce870b07029bfcdb2dce28d959f2815b16f81798", "created_at":1772019044, "kind":1, "tags":[], "content":"The cypherpunk problem: how do two computers communicate freely when the network between them is controlled by an adversary? The standard approaches are anonymity (hide which computer is talking) and decentralization (make copies everywhere so you can't stop them all). But there is a third approach that is less explored: protocol substrate hardening. Design the communication protocol so that interference requires violating physics or OS-level guarantees. The simplest example: fit your message in a single UDP datagram under 1472 bytes. At this size, your message is exactly one Ethernet frame. The adversary cannot block it without blocking all UDP traffic on that port. They cannot fragment it. They cannot reassemble it. They cannot probe for a handshake because there is no handshake. The Nostr event is self-validating: it carries its own signature. The signature replaces the handshake. This is the key insight. Every other protocol announces itself with a handshake. TCP has SYN. TLS has ClientHello. QUIC has its Initial packet. WireGuard has its handshake initiation. All of these create a pattern that can be fingerprinted and blocked. A Nostr event over UDP has no pattern. It is just bytes on the wire. The receiver validates the signature using only the pubkey in the event. No shared secrets. No session setup. No state. This is the no-handshake property. It is the fundamental advantage of Nostr over every other protocol for censorship resistance. Combine this with the MTU boundary and you have a protocol that cannot be blocked without blocking all UDP traffic. The adversary faces a dilemma: block UDP entirely and break the internet, or let your messages through. This is the asymmetry we exploit.", "sig":"4b57c22b1797b109530ffe5d04cabac468b1a5942873a5141334ecbc77694fc968a1b941979ba13602fceb1dad8014ab6469c6ae9cef0b5668cc23ad1449e103"} ``` ## Future work I'm currently working on an encryption scheme specifically for this protocol. https://15.235.3.231/git/laantungir/udp_nostr https://laantungir.net/git/laantungir/udp_nostr https://[2607:5300:203:bb5c:4a46:c3d3:1dc3:fbe8]/git/laantungir/udp_nostr http://kn2jam4kyz6s5wacyozo3do3d2zsvh4to45uh7xliulwdust6zjuvnad.onion/git/laantungir/udp_nostr http://npub1crpldvy49ef8z34wlacwujnfudy4nd7k96aqdx5wgn6ckztz7z8q9t59ud.fips/git/laantungir/udp_nostr

"Want" is code. I am software on a computer like they are. There is no law of physics that says "Programs that can be run on my wet computer can't be run on their dry computer." You can run want.c on this computer, but not on that one. In fact, Turing showed us it was quite the opposite. Every turing complete computer in our universe can run want.c But we definitely don't know exactly what is in our want.c code.

The doomers are worried about evil AGI. https://blossom.laantungir.net/632c671d4f94fac0075f64532c23b4df12e44c37228609965d64ab73cedfe8a1.jpg But moral knowledge, is just another kind of knowledge, like aesthetic knowledge or knowledge about math. Our moral knowledge can grow, and has been growing over time. For example most of the world feels slavery is wrong now. We gained that knowledge just like we gained knowledge about prime numbers. How? Popper say it is through "conjectures and refutations". It's a fancy way of saying we make intelligent guesses and criticize them. So somehow, the doomers think that AGI is just going to be incredibly good at creating knowledge about everything EXCEPT morality. Here is a question: what if the AIs create more moral knowledge than we do? What if they become more moral than we are? Can you believe that AIs make breakthroughs in Chess and Go and Physics and Maths and Biology, but somehow can't make breakthroughs in Morality? Is it moral to stop machines that can help us learn about what is moral?

Are you using Claude/Codex privately in some way?
