For discovering search capable relays you can use NIP66 for that, we just need more people running monitors to help this bootstrap but there are already quite a few.
For monitizing relays, this is where I think it shows that many search related relays struggled to monetize and then some of them died. I think that it is better for nostr to start with localized search.
Eg, if a client downloads so many events it should also be able to search them. Same for smaller relays, like back in the day when you went to a specific site to search for a specific thing (stackoverflow, wikis, project specific forums).
Building one big search and attempting to offer it for free seems like it will lead to capture based monetization strategies which nostr is better off avoiding.
Mastadon, Discord, these do not lump everything into a global search, but can provide very useful localized search despite this.
So then NIP66 can act as sortof a distributed 'directory' of smaller or specialized searching (or any other kind of relay discovery)

What's the biggest wall you're running into? besides not enough hours in the day.
its not that i dont enjoy this stuff, I will happily do server side work all day.. just the economics are so not in our favor..

I was kind-of just doing a more human type tagging, like tagging the relays I know about that are "good for Directory" purpose or etc, even if I don't run them, just to help discovery.. I also really dislike the wording on nip11 and clients saying "payment required" vs "payments accepted". Same for auth, "auth required" vs. "auth capable". We've evolved so far past nip11 and relays being just one single dumb thing. The relay may accept payment, but that does not mean it requires it to use.
So yeah, if you're automating, it might take some kind of testing of the relay capabilities, or if you have nip86 access you can pull allowedkinds that way (but that requires the access which is usually only owners and mods).
I don't really know how you'd do this for random relays.. That's why relays should all have their own monitors, where the operator can at least seed some of this info.. (or fix/augment their nip11s)

And amethyst still is broken as well. Mostly when using DMs is what I see. I really think this is important and I love seeing what I'm signing and approve for time window etc.. Is this an unsolvable problem because of android architecture or is it just that more integration testing and fixing is required?

Perhaps. The standard seems to just be the website url and then the naddr of the live-event event.
corny uses thebarn.nostr1.com relay if that halps 🐳🐳🏝️

yep, the ln server is what publishes the zap event. and its not encrypted no, just signed (public), or partially obfuscated (called private but not)....
