My daughter, who just finished college and landed a job five minutes from home two weeks out of school is also on the local volunteer fire department. I encouraged her to get in there as a junior three years ago, as it was one of the best things I ever did as a young person.
We were just getting ready for dinner a few hours ago, and she got a call for a structure fire. She just texted me. Not only was she first in to the building on full SCBA, but she encountered a cat that had been overcome by smoke in the blaze. No people were in the building, fortunately. She brought the cat outside and performed CPR on it, only for it to pass away.  They are just cleaning up hose and debriefing at the station right now. Can’t wait to give her a big hug.

We finally got rid of the 2 worst hazard trees in the neighbourhood today at my neighbours’ today. It’s already had a 1500lb chunk come out of it once and narrowly miss a vehicle. Fence wasn’t so lucky. Everything above the 16 foot mark was regrowth after it was topped nearly 20 years ago and let continue to grow. 
That’s 30 bags of leaves I won’t have to rake up in my yard this year too lol.

It’s so cool seeing the light switch on when they get it, and realizing the freedom it gives them. The biggest thing I had to drill early was the skill of shoulder checking. Saved their lives a few times early on.

After three years of growing beautiful tomato seedlings from seed I’ve finally recognized that regardless of pot size, tomatoes in open ground or very deep beds open to the earth will always outperform those in pots. They need way more legroom and temperature moderation in the root zone then even a very large pot can provide. Plus I’m certain that the actual connection to the Earth is part of the equation.  In year one, I got 80 pounds of tomatoes off seven plants that all reached almost 6 feet in height, in an open-bottomed 8’x4’ bed that currently holds my cucumber and squash trellises. This year the only tomato plant that is thriving is the one whose roots are free to go anywhere they like. The ones in pots, even very large 5 gallon containers, are visibly stressed the same as the ones in 3 gallon pots were last year. At first I thought it was a soil problem, but I’ve done everything right in that regard in these pots and they just don’t like it.  when these black pots get irradiated by sun all day, the temperature in the root zone can easily reach 80°F and it’s amazing how quickly they become root bound. I will still get some yield off of these but their big brother in the bed is going to put them to shame. 
It’s all part of the process of working out the kinks in a small setting so that when we move to a space with some serious production capability, I’ll have figured many of these things out. On Sunday we are going to look at a nearly 6 acre partially forested place with animal corrals, fencing around the perimeter and loads of growing space. Lord willing, we will be building our vision for self sufficiency there.

But I made a few comments during talks on the beach and around the fire about the importance of hard assets, transactional freedom, communications privacy, free speech and the whole fiat currency/melting ice cube thing, and was met a few times with the usual look as if I had two heads lol. “Like, why do you even think about this stuff?” I swear the same % of people that couldn’t see through the Covid lies are sleepwalking straight through the gates into the control grid without questioning a thing.

I went and prepped the site of my guerrilla gardening experiment tonight and saw one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in my soil nerd life. As I levelled off a 15x12” area where I plan to plant and basically abandon 50-60 seed potatoes and onions in these 5-6 year old composted chip piles, I realized that at a depth of about 6”, the entire 50x20yd collection of scores of chip piles were host to one gigantic mycelium network. Everywhere I dug, the same mesh of white mycelial fibres, from one end of the stockpile to the other. If you look at the closeups, it was the same mesh everywhere. All connected. All one giant organism. Man nature is amazing. #permaculture

If you end up using straw for insulation/mulch you just have to make darn sure that you’re not getting it from a source that’s still new enough to have any roundup residue on it. For example from a farm that desiccates grain crops using herbicide. It can kill whatever is under it and get into your food supply.

Cutting seed potatoes so the cut edges can harden up before I put them in the wet ground. I can’t believe how versatile a plant potatoes are. Literally millions of people including my great great great great grandparents only lived to see another day because of them.

I’m not starting much from seed this year, just big beef tomatoes, red bell peppers, and wicked ghost peppers. Everything else in the garden this year is going to be high nutrition root crops, tubers and curcubits (squash).
I wanted to try growing sweet potatoes this year and perpetuating root stock, but they appear to be some sort of highly guarded food technology in Canada. Every outlet that sells slips is out of business and the one I did find in Ontario informed me when I sent in my order, after 2 months of correspondence confirming availability, that they won’t be filling orders this year. No explanation given, just “due to circumstances beyond our control”. They wouldn’t even tell me what happened when I pressed them on it. I’ve tried starting my own with store bought organic sweet potatoes, but I suspect the anti-sprouting compound they spray on them was the reason I couldn’t get them to sprout after several attempts.
One experiment I am excited about is doing some totally unattended potatoes and onions at a local spot where tree companies have been depositing wood chips for years. It’ll be cool to see if I get any yield in the piles that have fully composted to soil.

My wife found the magic bullet for this.
- lower cupboard with an upper and lower shelf
- top shelf has the containers all nested
- bottom shelf has a box that you can pull out that has all the lids in it.
Works amazingly well. Easy for the kids to do when putting away clean stuff.
