For every mitigation, you also must ensure that you are not creating a new risk that is as high or higher than the one you’re trying to reduce. “Just don’t make a mistake” is only allowed for the green zones. I’m seeing a lot of recommendations for how to change your bitcoin storage setup that give no consideration of the new risks they create. If you are rolling dice and didn’t create the full 24 word list by hand and then enter those words into the restore wallet function, isn’t it pretty much security theatre? You’re still creating something using software. Seems it was only useful in the Coldcard because it was a different software path outside of the deficient code. How do you know the next incident won’t be where the dice roll path is the one broken on a different hardware wallet. I’ve yet to see a cryptography professional who says they would use or trust true entropy created by hand?

For those reconsidering their bitcoin setup, may I offer the following dad thought. There is ancient wisdom in the idea of not putting all your eggs in one basket. In this case, your bitcoin are the eggs and where you store them is the basket. The Cold Card hack proves again to me that there is no ideal set up. So many Monday morning quarterbacking this seem to be focused on how everyone should have rolled dice, used a paraphrase, used multisig, etc. All that may be true but I’m gonna be the old non techie guy saying split your eggs into multiple baskets. Put no more than 25% of your bitcoin in any one wallet no matter how good you think the security is. If you were fortunate (like I) to not have used a Cold Card, try to put yourself emotionally in that position. How much better off would you feel if you were only trying to save 25% of your stack rather than everything? Software is not, and never will be perfect. Every setup has a weak point and a different risk profile. Our eggs are valuable. Cold wallets, hot wallets, multi-sig, different vendors, and even some custodial bitcoin, all have their place. If it would hurt you badly to loose your eggs, consider multiple high quality baskets instead of just one. Even though bitcoin is high tech we can still apply ancient wisdom to our actions. Take care out there.

This ego hit on nostr is too much for many people who were popular on other social media platforms. That’s why the advertising model works on other social media. You can convince yourself that your million followers all value your content (even though they would never pay even one sat for it). Advertisers know readers are just entertaining themselves so they can buy their attention and easily distract them away from your content with a shinny new thing. Only a few people will ever create content that people value enough for the content creator to come out ahead. Nostr delivers this truth in an undeniable fashion.
