Before Rome ruled the ancient world, someone else ruled Italy first, and most of what we think of as "Roman" actually started with them.
Who were they?
The Etruscans dominated central Italy, roughly modern Tuscany, from the 8th to 3rd century BCE. They spoke a language unrelated to Latin or almost anything else on Earth, and it's still only partly deciphered today. One of their few surviving texts, the Liber Linteus, only survived because it was cut into strips and used to wrap an Egyptian mummy. 🧻
Not invaders, natives
Ancient writers like Herodotus claimed the Etruscans migrated from Lydia (modern Turkey). Modern DNA studies say otherwise, they were indigenous, evolving straight out of the local Iron Age Villanovan culture.
A confederation, not an empire
Etruria wasn't one nation, it was a league of 12 independent city-states, each ruled by powerful aristocratic families. Society was famously wealthy and leisured, and women held a level of social equality rare for the ancient world.
Rome's actual origin story
Here's the part that surprises people: Rome itself was ruled by Etruscan kings from 616–510 BC, the legendary Tarquins. The Romans learned their alphabet, numerals, religious divination practices, and even the arch and vault (yes, the literal architectural arch) from the Etruscans. Even the name "Rome" is thought to be Etruscan in origin.
Advanced beyond their reputation
The Etruscans practiced surprisingly sophisticated medicine, cranial surgery, gold dental prosthetics, real anatomical knowledge. Their trade network stretched across the Mediterranean, exporting wine and glossy black bucchero pottery as far as Egypt, Spain, and Cyprus.
Erased, but never really gone
Rome eventually crushed Etruria, sacking their cities, destroying their literature, and absorbing their people. For centuries the Etruscans were nearly forgotten, until archaeologists cracked open intact tombs and realized how much of "Roman" civilization was Etruscan all along. 🏛️

The world's longest surviving Etruscan text isn't carved in stone, it's wrapped around a mummy.
In 1848, a Croatian official named Mihajlo Barić bought a sarcophagus in Alexandria, Egypt, as a souvenir. Inside was the mummy of a woman, wrapped in strips of linen covered in mysterious writing. He propped her up in his living room for years, having no idea what the text said.
When the wrappings were finally studied properly in 1891, experts first guessed the script was Coptic, Libyan, or even Arabic. They were wrong on all counts, it turned out to be Etruscan, the enigmatic pre-Roman language of Italy that's still only partially understood today.
The linen had nothing to do with the Egyptian woman it was wrapped around, it was probably just spare fabric the embalmers had on hand. The book itself was written centuries earlier, likely a religious/ritual calendar, in what's now Tuscany.
Today it's known as the Liber Linteus ("Linen Book"), and it sits in a climate-controlled room in Zagreb, Croatia, the oldest surviving book in Europe, hiding in plain sight as mummy wrapping for over 2,000 years.

I just see Christianity differently than you do... to you, it represents a higher power that you genuinely believe in... I simply don't share that belief... I'm open to the idea that there could be something greater than us that set everything in motion, but if such a thing exists, I don't think it's necessarily anything like the gods described by any religion. At the same time, I also leave open the possibility that there doesn't have to be a higher power at all... that our minds naturally search for a beginning because we're conscious beings trying to understand our own existence... maybe we're simply a brief spark of consciousness in an otherwise unconscious universe.... that's how I see it...

Moral feelings did not appear out of nowhere, they evolved because empathy, cooperation, and protecting others helped conscious social beings survive. As i already mentioned... the fact that morality comes from a brain shaped by evolution does not make it meaningless. Our ability to reason also comes from our brains, but that doesn't make logic an illusion.

Atoms don’t create morality by themselves, but they created minds capable of feeling and understanding it. Let me check on my app how much i used last month... it says 100 cedis... which is 8.61 $ but those who dont have solar suffer huge electrical bills... im lucky I have solar or else I would be doomed... i was spending 50 cedis per day in my old house without using air-conditioning... it was hell... i feel sorry for those in ghana who dont use solar. By the way most of nigeria runs on generators and in newer age solar. Their electricity was so expensive that fuel was cheaper to get. Seems its a chronic problem of west africa. For me to know exactly how much i spent in kwh I would have to request a reading so I just checked the amount bought rather. Everything that is connected to my sockets is on solar that includes all the water heaters and appliances and water pumps... basically im just paying for 1 aircon running that has an inverter so its not expensive at all...

Our biggest problem is electrical current that can burst your fuses out in the sky. Hope you find inexpensive solution ... its hell to be without aircon in that kind of a weather... did you try to put it on heating for some time and back to cooling just to try and give that compressor of yours a bit of a kick?
