do you also worry that maybe hackers will break ECC and be able to derive your private key from an address? I mean you're not wrong, it is additional complexity. But I'm not sure its consistent to trust cryptography on one but then be suspicious of cryptography that guarantees supply. Its just a symptom of early days. In 20yrs not trusting zero knowledge proofs to guarantee supply will be like nocoiners worrying about hackers breaking Bitcoin to steal your privkey.

Don't be absurd. A standard zerolink coinjoin hides your utxo as a 1-of-5. And what % of Bitcoin goes through a CJ? Right practically none. So your anon set is teeny tiny. And theres no forward privacy so if you do anything to link that utxo to your identity afterwards your coinjoin means jack shit. Just to start with. There is no substitute for default privacy.

I think MAGIC has funded four professional reviews of different aspects of the upgrade. I know the Open source development initiative has also done stuff in the past, but I think it's mostly MAGIC now. And there is CSS money for funding the devs and ongoing work. Monero's additional complexity is definitely more attack surface. And considering we are trying for a major major upgrade this year, I'm a little freaked out. A little surprised we haven't seen a sudden "everybody needs to upgrade their nodes right fucking now" from the devs TBH. But maybe it's actually solid. I know they've been hitting it with the llms, and I'm sure the black hats have also. The vulnerabilities will continue until everybody fixes their shit.

Let's suppose you are the Liquid hacker and you realized you're set for life if you can just figure out what to do with these 600 BTC. Since LN is such a super great L2 with onion routing that you can use for private payments, Who do you open a channel to? I mean, the blockchain trilemma is real. There are no designs that eliminate scaling and centralization pressures. Monero just makes another different set of trade-offs. Likewise, I don't think there is any way to prevent a dedicated spam attack from an adversary that has unlimited money. But making the cost of performing the attack quadratic rather than linear is a good start.

It isn't intellectually consistent to trust cryptography to do wonderful and strange things for you on bitcoin But then turn around and be suspicious of cryptography because it guarantees supply on another chain. In 20 years not trusting cryptography to guarantee supply will be as ridiculous as nocoiners thinking hackers can steal your private key.

The good reverend (and many others too) make a interesting point: If the thesis is that The Adversary prevents sovereign usage of Bitcoin at the financial level (Chokepoint 2.0 etc), how is that any different than where Monero sits *right now*? Obviously it has greater privacy going for it, so USAGE can be less paranoid but interface with the legacy system is still hamstrung in the exact same way. So we have a reality where both your Monero and your self-custodied sats are not accepted by merchants because they can't use them for their own inputs. As a result, real crypto circular economies can only develop in free jurisdictions where merchants can trade their Bitcoin / Monero for whatever inputs they need. In the end, its only real difference between the two systems is that users dont have to worry about being tracked. #bitcoin #monero nostr:nevent1qqsqqqqdmmd98w7pwey3jnpfhw7myvuhtvvrrljaf8k0pmjfk7797rcpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejsygzdqg7wnh7htflnqadcarsggqytu9ap7agvvw6auus7dmug8tw8v5fl8jem

I will absolutely concede that a single jurisdiction cannot regulate Bitcoin to death. I'm concerned about usability from *my own* perspective, because I'm not going to change jurisdictions to be able to use Bitcoin. And if we look at it from that perspective, hashrate discussions are beside the point. It is much more relevant whether or not the vendor I want to transact with can accept my Bitcoin. If for regulatory reasons my vendors cannot accept my nonkyced self custodied sats (only cucked Bitcoin allowed) it isn't useful for me. It's easy to see a future where the dominant jurisdiction prevents users escaping to bitcoin through friction and regulation, not through outright bans. They stop it at the banking layer, not at the hash layer. And if there's a competing BRICS type jurisdiction, they have the same concern of users escaping into a neutral money. I don't understand why they would welcome Bitcoin and have positive Bitcoin regulation. Isnt it in EVERY states interest to block the on / off ramps? Let it exist as an economically insignificant, yet functioning, Network somewhere. Just not here.

I feel like we just came back around to the beginning. If I have to get my transaction mined an obscure pool somewhere and it takes hours or days, And maybe I have to do some out of band payment It's hard to not see that as "effectively stopped. " Monero certainly needs more pools, but the ones we have are not regulated. Since mining is not kyced or regulated, it doesn't have the same class of problems.

Yeah I was aware of that. It's unclear to me if it's a significant amount or not. Isn't it a question of pool decentralization tho? And not whether there's still physical hash in China? I need a pool to submit my transaction to. But maybe I dont understand the issue well enough. Heres another thought experiment that might be more germane. Suppose I'm a person in the over-regulated New Western Bloc and I want to make a purchase with Bitcoin. But because csam, terrorism etc Western exchanges now require proof of origin of funds. So the merchant I want to exchange with cannot accept my self-custodied SATs. They need to sell for fiat to buy raw materials and cannot take the risk these funds will be rejected. Anyway It seems to me there's a number of different ways it could go, which essentially amounts to sovereign usage being throttled to death.

Gambling on the success of a specific thing and increasing your chances of success by encouraging others to do make the same gamble is fine. And discouraging others from making other choices because it doesn't support the network you're invested in is a pretty normal choice. But I think we can do better than this. We can recognize and support ALL networks and protocols that encourage human freedom and have discussion about their advantages and disadvantages. To the benefit of everyone. The cost of doing so is just the time needed to actually learn about different protocols.
