Private money assumes the goal is exit. Get out from under surveillance, transact without permission, stay unreadable. Public money assumes the goal is a functioning commons, where reputation and value are legible so strangers can coordinate without trusting each other first. Nostr is trying to be the second thing. It's a public square where people build audiences, and an economy is only visible if the payments are.\n\nA zap does something no private transfer can. It makes the value of good work legible to third parties who weren't part of the transaction. Price discovery only happens where prices are public. Everything else is bilateral deals.",
