Privacy money and public money are answering different questions about what a network is for. Private money assumes the goal is exit. Get out from under surveillance, transact without permission, stay unreadable. Public money assumes the goal is a functioning commons, where reputation and value are legible so strangers can coordinate without trusting each other first. Nostr is trying to be the second thing. It's a public square where people build audiences, and an economy is only visible if the payments are.
A zap does something no private transfer can. It makes the value of good work legible to third parties who weren't part of the transaction. Price discovery only happens where prices are public. Everything else is bilateral deals.

Why is it easier to zap a shitpost than a note you actually thought about? There’s a gap that shows up in the data I think we should talk about…
There's research on public gestures that should bother us. People who make a visible token show of support for a cause, wearing the pin, joining the group, signing the petition, end up less likely to do anything real for it afterward. Do it privately and the real support goes up. The public gesture settles the account. You looked like someone who cared, and the impulse that would've cost you something is gone.
Hand somebody a dollar in quarters and they spend it. Hand them the same dollar as a bill and they hold it. People take the large denomination on purpose when they're trying to stop themselves. Nobody wants to break the bill.
A sat balance is one bill. No coins in your pocket, just a number, and a number reads as an amount instead of change. So the default on a full wallet is leave it whole, and we tell ourselves that's discipline.
Money is never generic in practice. People sort it constantly, same currency filed into rent money and money you'd never touch, and identical dollars behave differently depending on the pile. I’ve read some documentation on it and it holds up everywhere anyone's looked.
We filed all of it into one pile. Every sat, savings. Correct call for fifteen years and it's the conviction that got us here. But the filing system can't tell cold storage apart from four thousand sats sitting in a hot wallet for exactly this purpose.

Money that never moves stops being money inside the head of the person holding it. You stop thinking in it. It becomes a number you check.
Zapathons worked and the event had nothing to do with it. For one day everybody moved sats into a different pile and called it play. Nothing was being decided. Sats went out over dog photos, over jokes that didn't land, over a riff somebody recorded in their truck.
The fix is a filing change. Move a chunk of sats into a pile marked play, small enough that losing it all costs you nothing, big enough to last the month. Then spend it like it isn't yours, because you already decided it isn't.
We're the only network on earth where paying somebody for a good note is a normal thing to do. That only stays true while we're doing it.

I don't think they're lying.
The old Reformed Christians had a category for this and it wasn't "bad trip." Pharmakeia in Galatians sits right next to idolatry and sorcery. The problem was never the plant. It was going looking for a door God already nailed shut.
What bothers me more is the fascination. Encounter turned into episodes, told and retold. The tradition treated curiosity about the demonic as part of the same sin, not a safe balcony seat above it.
But I won't tell you a man is guaranteed to pick something up because he sat in a ceremony. Nobody gets to promise that. Job 1 is the whole framework for this. Nothing moves without permission from the throne, and the enemy is a creature on a leash, not a second god.
Some of what gets reported has ordinary causes too. Depersonalization is real. So is psychosis that was already loaded and waiting. Providence runs through secondary causes and the honest answer is usually that you don't know which one you're looking at.
The remedy Christianity offers is boring on purpose. Repentance. The Word preached. Prayer. A church that knows your name. No formulas, no binding sessions, nothing you perform.
Not a hair falls without the Father's will. That covers the ceremony and everything that came home with you.

I’ve started saying “and the rest is the future” instead.

Where I get stuck is that he makes reason the honest one. Mine mostly shows up after the fact to explain why what I already wanted was perfectly sensible. Which puts the thing doing the governing in on the deal.
That’s about where the comparison you’re seeing starts to pull apart. He’d say a disciplined man is a good man. The other side of it would say you can be extremely disciplined and aimed at the wrong thing the entire time, so the real fix has less to do with control and more to do with what you actually love.
Either way he’s right that there’s a fight going on. Most people never notice. Keep going, book five gets strange.

Speed limits assume life is worth protecting at cost. Contract law assumes promises bind. Theft statutes assume property is real. You cannot legislate without legislating morality, and nobody has ever done it.
So the question was never whether a nation enforces a creed. Only which one, and whether it’s honest about having one. Secularism isn’t the absence of establishment. It’s an establishment that denies being one.
