SITREP: THE QUANTUM BILL COMES DUE

SITUATION

Bitcoin’s signature scheme runs on elliptic curve math. Sound today. Theoretically breakable by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm. Nobody’s built that machine yet. Doesn’t mean you wait until they do.

NEW ASSET IN THE FIELD

Blockstream researcher Jonas Nick, working with Mikhail Kudinov, published a formal proposal this week. Codename SHRINCS. First post quantum signature scheme built specifically for Bitcoin, not adapted from a government standard and jammed into place.

COST OF THE MISSION

Every defense has a price. Deploy the NIST approved quantum safe signatures and Bitcoin’s throughput takes a direct hit, dropping from roughly 6.5 transactions per second to under one. That’s not a minor casualty. That’s a different network limping home.

SHRINCS holds the line at close to three transactions per second. Signatures start small, 324 bytes against Schnorr’s 64, and only grow as the mission requires.

SUPPLY LINE

SHRINCS runs on SHA-256. Same hash function already securing Bitcoin’s mining operations. No new math to trust, no unproven asset dropped into the field. Just more load on infrastructure that’s held for seventeen years.

EXPOSURE

Every operation has a weak flank. SHRINCS is stateful. A wallet has to track every key it’s already fired. Restore a seed onto new hardware and it falls back to heavier signatures. Reuse a spent key and funds are exposed. This isn’t a problem for the developers back at command. It lands on whoever’s holding the coins.
