One of my first jobs (70s) was fencing on a ranch. Somebody else dug the holes with a post hole digger off the back of a three point hitch on a 40s Ford tractor. My job was simply to creosote the wood posts and put them in the holes. I have no idea what the environmental outcome of that was, I suppose I could search, but didn't think of it until I saw your post.
