Personally, I agree FOSS is the ideal model but the reality is that over the long run, it’s unsustainable unless at the very least hosting, & development costs are covered.
Either the community has to set up, & voluntarily donate, or Vitor has to eat the costs.
And I don’t about you but me personally I stopped my crypto website project because I couldn’t eat costs.
Even me as someone who is a FOSS maximalist realize that everything has to be turned into a business model in order to survive unfortunately.
If you’re not shilling something then you’re losing time, & money for others who really don’t care that much.
Making it into a business model at least levels the playing field, gives people a good service, & keeps the dev alive, or at least out of the red on the project.

The passion, jobs, knowledge, talents, skills, capabilities, situation are all different.
Maybe you're a 16 year old female that just got raped that I'm assuming would mess you up mentally, and prevent you from getting a retail job, or customer service job since the verbal abuse would remind you of bad things.
Maybe you're a 17 year old dude that has an abusive alcoholic dad, and a druggie mom that has sex with strange men, so you join the military to escape but then your leg gets blown off in Iran.
Maybe you're a 21 year old dude, and your girlfriend just filmed an onlyfan promo where she had sex with 5 dudes, and she was the only girl that understood you the only way no one else could, so you just drink to forget.
Maybe you're a 23 year old woman raised catholic, had a nice stable family, parents were always emotionally available, dad worked banker hours, always in your life, mom loved your dad.
Maybe you're a 25 year old Quant Manager as at Hedge Fund because your immigrant dad from China worked hard to become a civic engineer, and get you a stable life.
Some people are good at cleaning toilets, driving cars/trucks/vans/limos, signing, dancing, music, art, poetry, lifting heavy things, designing combustion engines, doing repetitive tasks, engaging with people, jumping, and running triathlons, counting cards, cooking programming, solving mathematic formulas.

I think most of them were private at some point but then got bought out by entities like Meta, and people never really bothered to change.
But I also think there's a lot of FUD around signal being funded by The CIA, etc., even though almost every hard-core privacy organization, and government critic recommends signal (but maybe people think those people are controlled opposition).
Who knows, I hope that tools like SimpleX, Threema, Signal, Session, or other E2E improve.
I believe that we can get big numbers but it's going to take a lot of strong intial momentum to accomplish it.
