The white paper is by definition not "first principles". At all. And I think reconsidering this might possibly lead you to reconsider other opinions as well, just based on how flawed I think this perspective is.
The IDEA of bitcoin seems to be founded deeply from first principles.
The white paper is an explanation of how this idea can be constructed and brought to life.
The actual code implementations then finally take the guidelines of the whitepaper to implement the idea in code-form, thus bringing it into our reality in terms of actually being able to use it.
When we then later decide to deviate from the whitepaper, if those deviations improve on project, where improvement is based on the first principles of the societal problems bitcoin seeks to solve, then those changes are (probably) good.
When the changes then show to have had negative side effects that outweigh the benefits, we must conclude that we were idiots when we implemented that change.
But the white paper in itself is not first principles.
Human rights are first principles.
Laws of physics are first principles.
Nature is first principles.

I cringe every time I see someone refer to "what satoshi envisioned".
I think it is entirely un-bitcoin-esque to refer to satoshi for anything other than the merit of his brilliance.
As a bitcoiner, I take pride in being able to think from a first principles point of view. Satoshi is not first principles, but his idea was indeed founded from a deep understanding of solving a problem from a first principles approach.
And that is why, referring to the white paper, or something satoshi has said, is practically irrelevant, except as an worthy opinion in a debate of many opinions.
We must think and build and solve from a first principles point of view.

If anything, BIP110 blundered an opportunity to fix the very real problems it addressed. Imagine if Luke, via Knots had fought in the same arena as core.
Core made a policy change.
Luke managed to get adoption of his implementation that reverted that policy change.
In hindsight, why go the extra step in a rushed way? Had adoption of knots continued, that in and of itself would've been a viable response.
I agree with Samson Mow that the problem was not urgent enough to warrant a *rushed* soft fork.

Seems the wider community just didn't care.
BIP110 was a wrong solution to a valid problem. This has been stated by many great minds in bitcoin.
The problem was it was also the *only* solution.
That puts real plebs in a difficult situation and creating the choice of "bad" or "worse".
I think core is "worse", but enough people didn't agree.
I think bip110 enforced the way it was, was horrible, but for me personally, I'd rather do that and win the rest of the community over than do nothing at all.
Samson Mow said on The bitcoin podcast, paraphrasing "core made the change, i didnt agree with it and gave them shit for it, but its done, they already did it, its over, so I moved on and stopped talking about it"
That doesnt sit well with me, to just say "ok, ill continue running your code"
And thats the feeling and attitude that pushed me to want something else.
I personally feel that "something else" was just running knots instead.
Clearly the BIP110 part of things was not the right call.
I think we as bitcoiners just need to be and do better.

I dont feel Odell has given us any reason to believe he is a bad actor.
In fact, him arguing from an emotional standpoint in latest RHR screams to me that he is shaken by the prospect of bitcoin failing as a result of this debacle - because he and his family rely on bitcoin.

Ironically, Odells emotional response is kind of signalling a deep (subconcious) understanding of the severity of the problem that core30 introduced.
I.e. the attack vector that makes Odell fear the prospects of bip110. He just doesnt realize it and projects his anger towards luke and mechanic.
