normal brain melted idiot on TikTok or X does not notice when things from other people are not showing up in their feed. Tons of people shadowbanned on Twitter never noticed — the only people that did are ones that paid close attention to analytics. Due to the decentralized nature of Nostr, there are no good analytics. If you are shadowbanned unless you are extremely attentive and have a lot of arbitrary search feeds, and extra accounts to follow your own content, you will have *no idea* that Primal’s feed is biased against you. Only web professionals will ever notice. Normal people will not notice.
If Nostr is ever commonly successful, and has a billion people using it, that translates to businesses made and broken. To ideas subverted for political purposes with payouts from campaign funds. It means a lot of things. Just because you can take your nsec elsewhere doesn’t mean much. Normal people are not going to notice that the sky in the Skinner box is being manipulated.

they can and do shadowban a lot of content on Primal. Maybe you don’t think of shadowbanning as censorship. But any limitation of reach for people controls the social graph. That means they determine who will be a talking head on Nostr, who will be an influencer. Shadowbanning is absolutely censorship, when Primal does it, when Twitter does it. You might not think that it’s censorship because it isn’t outright blocked, but it is probabilistic and statistical censorship. “I can see it on Primal” is not an evidence of a lack of censorship on social media services. Twitter shadowbanned content for tens of millions of Trump supporters in the Biden era.

I'm going to defend myself at this point, in that is a perfectly fine paragraph size, and actually quite small, if you consider the historical style standards of the English language. Henry Fielding’s The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749) contains single paragraphs that are four times that long. Check out the last and unfinished paragraph on this page of *Joseph Andrews* — that’s a big chungus. I really think people should write like the classics. Longer paragraphs, more passive voice. More periodic and complex sentences, often diluting the subject, verb, object pattern to which we are so accustomed. Frankly English now just sounds like trash. It used to be such a lark, meandering through a rococo smattering of words that painted such a wondrous scene of prose upon the vellum.

I was falsely accused of crimes by the federal government for accessing a public web API in a way that a prosecutor didn’t like. Then I was tortured. Then I was banned from the banking system and financial exchanges in 2014, when I was trying to start a hedge fund. Then I was banned from Twitter in 2016. If I weren’t an early Bitcoiner I would be penniless and homeless because I have been so egregiously tortured and abused by the federal government that my brain no longer works. I can quantify it, I have a fucking *10 stone* difference in Go rank before and after prison. So if it seems like I have a difficult relationship with punctuation, you are probably right. And that and also that it has the most people is exactly why it is absolutely dangerous for it to be so centralized. The largest client shouldn’t have the ability to subtly manipulate the reach/exposure of notes and identities without anyone being able to tell. That’s a capability that nobody should have, and sidesteps the entire point of Nostr.

It would be good for Primal (doesn’t make them a future legal and intelligence target) and good for the Nostr ecosystem (preserves decentralization).

At this point you have to start asking — who the hell are Primal’s investors? Who is really calling the shots? Who is on its board?
Max Webster of Hivemind Ventures, for example, comes basically out of nowhere. He had an international solar energy (potentially a literal glownigger) company funded by Max Levchin, which just inches very closely to the surveillance economy and Peter Thiel’s Palantir. Then he was at Version One, a VC firm which was run by an a16z board member.
I’m not trying to personalize this, but I’ve never seen anything so ridiculously shilled on Nostr as this “Primal is decentralized” narrative. It makes no sense that it is pushed so aggressively and defended so hard. Do so many random small accounts have that much brand loyalty to one of many Nostr clients? Why wouldn’t they want it to be more, not less decentralized? Why would they be demanding that Primal be able to censor people. It makes way more sense that this is a paid PR strategy.

You don’t understand that Primal is already curating its algorithmic feed. That’s a form of editorialization and censorship. You aren’t checking the entire Nostr social graph — you are only checking specific posts. Even a tiny smidgeon of statistical bias can completely change the social graph.
Normal people are not using 4 Nostr clients, and you are only checking for *your* posts. This means you would only notice censorship both if it were happening to you and only if Primal censored the posts to the author as well. Obviously, that’s never how it works. Shadowbanning is the absolute inverse. You don’t get any notification that you’re banned, but your reach is limited beyond the capacity of a normal person to demonstrate how, and sometimes isn’t even noticed by the author.

Most clients outside Primal have multiple relays by default, most or all of which they do not control. This includes Amethyst, Damus, Wisp, etc. If chooses Damus to block me on their relay, most people are still going to see my content because I am publishing to the other relays. Also most people can, via the relay hints provided by nevents when you quote a post, fetch my content from relays I post to even if you do not directly follow me or subscribe to my relay. If Primus blocks me from their caching server’s algorithmic feed, then I am silently erased and you will never see my content again. The only way this is different from Twitter is because people can take their nsecs elsewhere, but they provide no notice to users or opportunity for transparency as to what content they have removed. It is not just “caching the content from the relay” btw, it is selecting who gets seen at all in an editorialized fashion. And they have been caught not only censoring likes, but censoring entirely the display of basic post content in their algorithmic relay feed.

Primal has a known track record of censoring individuals from their algorithmic feed from their caching server. I suggest you use any client but Primal. The UI is well done and if it were built according to principles of decentralization and freedom it would definitely be my daily driver. But I think trading liberty and the future of Nostr’s decentralization for convenience is a devil’s bargain. Use any client but Primal.

Sure, but a social pinning model and IPFS peer graph makes this irrelevant. We’re not talking about an ancient file. We’re talking about a message that I *just posted* that is being ostensibly served by my followers. Your first IPFS node to check could be one I offer via the same tor onion as my relay. And I’m sure to have it, it’s my file. An easy place to query for a hash that is not me, in this instance, would be my followers, who are, in this hypothetical, pinning my content. You don’t need to search the entire IFPS network.
Regardless, this is a side channel. It doesn’t have to be a silver bullet! It just has to make my content more available than it already is, and reduce immediate stress during peak hours upon public relays and media servers.
