Most if not all public relays are hosted on rented servers. Scaling will not be a problem. They might lower write limits to limit cost, but kind 1 and 0 events will be unaffected since they take up virtually no space. The first to fall will be the free media hosts like nostr.build but this will honestly be good imo because it will result in a relative increase in attention to all the people who pay for hosting or host themselves. It will mean that the million new kids won't completely take over the space, but they will be subject to the influence of the based MFs here that host their own shit.

I believe amethyst and many other clients actually just run a local relay. They hold a local database of posts, and all read requests are first synced to the local database. Then when you publish a note, it gets sent to the local relay like all the others, that's why it shows up in your feed immediately. This is a much better architecture IMO than not having it, since often times you will switch between screens while trying to show a lot of the same notes, and you don't have to re-request the same notes, or hard code the logic to pass notes up and down your app like a monkey. There are many different use cases that you can add to your app very easily with this architecture that would be a code nightmare to add without it. It does have the effect of an optimistic ui update, which is a good thing imo, and you can just do the upload confirmation modal that yakihonne does to avoid the situation Yusuf is facing where you think it worked when it didn't.

I'm not saying we will specifically return to a system of only eye witness testimony. I'm saying that the age of self-authenticating evidence is over. Until recently, a video or audio recording was considered authentic on its own. It was an absolute source of truth, accepted prima facie. This era is coming to an end. When we can generate any form of fake evidence, we will have to rely on reputation of humans. If you want to convict someone, a video will no longer be sufficient. You will need someone to testify that the video is authentic. And this testimony will be considered of the same class as a testimony from someone else claiming an alibi. Even with a video, that will only be counted as a single witness. If you have a personal recording that acquits you of the crime, it will be thrown out as evidence.

This will be the greatest ad for grapheneos imaginable. Practically the entire enthusiast userbase for android is here for some reason downstream of the ability to sideload. I can see this 10xing grapheneos/lineageos over the next few years. My prediction is it won't overtake android but it'll be too big to ignore (multiple % market share) and force android to take android closed source. This causes forces graphene and lineage and whatever remaining open source OS'es there are to band together and fork off that latest android version. The real question is whether Google then makes a breaking change to android so play store apks no longer work without them.

Turkey is completely cooked. The mere concept of civil liberties has completely been rooted out of the culture. 99% of the population genuinely has no desire whatsoever for any level of freedom for freedoms sake. You can make an argument to ban literally anything with the flimsiest argument and they would accept it if they themselves aren't impacted. I've been called crazy because I suggested that bakers should be able to set their bread prices. In Turkey, bread has a maximum price (which is actually the default price because no one sells below it). When they inflated the currency, they decreased the standard loaf size instead of increasing the price and it became a political controversy because they see the government directly shrinkflating. The crazy part is, not one thought by anyone about why is the government setting the price of bread. This country is completely cooked. There is no political cost whatever to authoritarianism. The slogan of every grassroots political movement is "why isn't the government doing anything about ___". The last election, every opposition candidate talks about the new agencies they will create. There is not a single politician that uses government overreach as a criticism against the current regime. The country is every day becoming more and more of a totalitarian hellhole and everyone on every side is completely in favor of the trajectory.

A user signs an event that they made a mistake and wants to change something about their post. I would rather see their edit. It doesn't go against cryptographic verifiability. If they try to maliciously change the content, that's easy to call out since you still have the original signed event. Deleting doesn't exist either technically. But it's still better UX for relay operators to delete posts that the user wants gone. And most do. It doesn't unsign the event. Anyone who has a copy can still spread that around, but it's just a basic courtesy to delete something that they want gone. Same goes for edits.

It would not help most of the newcomers complaining about engagement though, because most of them would be indifferentiable from an LLM output. The age of fully online discoverability is over for all but the most talented accounts (across any medium; short form, long articles, podcasts, videos etc.). Ideas like yours a decent way to promote the underrated accounts (and imo better than the tiktok model which is first filtering out most AI accounts with VPN IP filtering, then showing new accounts videos to 1000 people to gauge engagement metrics), but it does nothing for the actual 90+% of new users (who aren't capable of spewing signal by the minute), who drop off because they never found a community to keep them engaged with idle banter. Imo for this we need a fedi style system with onboarding onto community relays. Whatever niche you start engaging with nostr through, you will start off posting to their relay. For example, if there is a community of bronies on nostr, someone will start a mlp relay as a home base to host the new users who join nostr through their community. And here is the killer feature that would make this model work with no other changes: clients should look at your outbox relays and automatically determine the niche relays you're a part of, and put posts from it into your home feed. Less priority than your follows, but it should be woven in to keep the feed looking full.

AWS for example, everything is metered. You pay for how much you store, how many CPU cycles you use, how much it gets accessed etc. All the paid media hosts I've seen for nostr charge a flat fee per month, which means your seriously overpaying until you get close to maxing out the plan you're on. What I'm talking about would have some pricing like: 3¢/gb/month storage + 1¢/10,000 requests (Based off S3 pricing + healthy profit margin) In this model, I'd think nothing of signing up as my monthly cost will be negligible at first. My first month I might have 200mb of images that get seen by 100 people, leading to a 10 sat bill the first month. This will only grow over time as you upload more images and videos, but by then, you will have more media and much higher value actually provided by the service to you. Meanwhile nostr.build wants $1.50 a month right off the bat. This isn't much, but when your a new user, you are not gonna pay $1.50 to host a single picture. The pay as you go model is feasible to be fully zap funded, which would make onboarding immensely easy.

So you still have to trust them to delete the posts? Would it not be better to do it client side so you don't have to worry about a relay deciding to publish your post before you asked it to, or maybe they didn't receive your deletion request, or failed to delete for some reason? I personally would rather rely on a background process on my phone than a relay, especially since most people use relays they don't know and verify.

I did think of the use case, but I think it's far less necessary than you'd think. There are libraries to check current state, but checking distance to state borders is much more complex. While many people live near borders, not that many people actually cross the borders every day, to the point that it'd be necessary to download by default. In philly for example, it's only a bridge away from Camden NJ, but I've noticed from license plates that there is rarely ever a car from the other side on either side. Most cities on borders are separated by a toll bridge and people rarely cross day to day. Also, everyone has unlimited data nowadays. You can just hit them with the "would you like to download this states map?" modal when you see them in another state.
