Having read your comment, I checked with AI and it seems checking even 8 characters (if I remember correctly) can decrease the chances of being fooled by a fake address to impractical levels. But still, I’d prefer to check all the characters for the main transfer. Because 1) I won’t have to count which 12 characters I’d better check and 2) it reduces the stress levels and gives you some time to mentally prepare for clicking “Broadcast transaction”.

I know Codex isn’t open-source either, but I don’t like sharing my data with a Chinese company. If someone has the infrastructure to run it locally, though, maybe it’s a best choice. At the very least, it’s open-source.
My machine can only comfortably support 8B models, which isn’t sufficient for coding purposes or answering any real question. But hopefully more powerful infrastructure becomes more affordable.

The podcast clip that’s been circulating doesn’t incriminate Odell. He’s discussing a self-discovered vulnerability in firmware 4.0.0 (one release before the catastrophic 4.0.1), which only affected users who upgraded to that version. 4.0.1 was a patch of whatever vulnerability that existed in 4.0.0.
He’s talking about a different vulnerability that could have been exploited. Nothing in that clip suggests he knew 4.0.1 would introduce an entirely new bug.
Arguably, NVK didn’t know either. But his decision to move away from GPL-licensed code and adopt a source-available license just because he childishly hated competition is what ultimately set the stage for this catastrophe. It doesn’t make nvk any less responsible.

These are real shortcomings, but AI can help fix pretty much all of them. 😁
The most annoying one is Wi-Fi not working, but that's been an issue for me with several Linux distros across different computer models, not only on Mac. To fix it, you first need an internet connection over Ethernet. Once that's sorted, you can fix the rest from the comfort of your bed with Claude/Codex.
I did have the Wi-Fi issue on my MacBook Air and it was the first thing I fixed. It was essential. It's also the least trivial one, because you'll need an Ethernet adapter for your Mac. Other solutions do not require you to get/have extra hardware.
I don't have Touch ID and it's possible that one can't be fixed. I might be wrong though. I don't know how well well-known Linux distros handle that or if they use it at all.
I managed to customize several gestures and they're pretty good, but they don't feel as elegant as they did on macOS. They do work though. ;)
You'll lose some functionality and elegance. That's a given. But between a slow, outdated Mac and a functional, customizable Linux machine, I'll take Linux any day.
If you end up taking a different route, let me know. I'm especially curious about how well OCLP might work and if it slows a macbook significantly or not. Keep me posted 😉

I use its bots to monitor my NAS and all the services running on it.
You monitored my Bitcoin node (before it died 🤪) the same way, completely for free.
You can also integrate your own apps with Telegram and use it as your program’s GUI.
I have a bot there that my friend has written and we use it to organize our memes and videos and call them with keywords in any chat. 😂 It’s completely self-hosted and private. 😎
Most of Telegram’s features are free. I still bought Premium, not because I needed it, but because I appreciate the work they’re doing. It was my way of saying thank you.

I recommend Linux Mint. You install it and it fucking works. That's what I love about it. (I used to recommend Ubuntu, but they've made some decisions around package installation that really upset a lot of people. I find the way they handle it pretty dishonest, so I don't recommend it anymore.)
With many other distros, getting the basics set up for everyday use can take a bit of work. Linux Mint is much more user-friendly in that regard. You install it and you can immediately play videos and music, do word processing, and integrate your Google account to sync your Calendar and Google Drive files. If you go with Mint, you won't have to dive too deep into the Linux rabbit hole to just get it working. You can always explore more at your own pace if it starts to interest you. (And I'm sure it will. 😉)
Even if you get stuck somewhere, you can just ask Codex or Claude to fix it for you, and they'll simply do it.
Codex is terminal-based. But don't think of it like a traditional terminal app where you have to type commands for every little thing. You launch it by typing `codex` and from that point on, you're mostly just chatting with it in a retro-looking terminal window, which has its own charm. :)))) That's the beauty of AI agents: instead of memorizing commands, you just talk to them.
Claude, on the other hand, has a GUI, so that's definitely a point in its favor. Funny enough, I'd been using Claude in the terminal on my Linux Mint for so long that I completely forgot I'd even installed the GUI. I actually had to look it up to make sure there was a Linux version. 😄 (I had to look it up because I'm writing this from a Mac machine.)

I hadn't heard of OCLP. I didn't even know something like that existed. I had an old MacBook Air and the latest macOS update it supported made it unbearably slow. Chrome, Brave, and Google Drive started warning me they were going to stop supporting it. Imagine, even the browsers were about to stop getting updates. :)))
So I installed Linux Mint on it and now it runs like a champion. 🤩 I'm going to do the same with my wife's MacBook, which is actually in better condition than mine.
Once you have Linux, you can use these agents through the Terminal, which isn't the most comfortable experience. I'm definitely a GUI maxi when it comes to AI agents. They make everything soooooo much easier and faster, and they help you keep everything organized. But the terminal is perfectly livable. You can still make them do the craziest shit you can't imagine yourself ever learning to do. These guys are amazing! They've saved me so much money by stopping me from buying unnecessary shit and I haven't even mentioned how much time they've saved me.

That's precisely what I mean. ChatGPT tries to learn about you without you having to explicitly tell it to (although you should enable the Memory feature in the settings). With Claude, my experience has been the opposite. Every new chat feels like meeting for the first time. Maybe I'm being unfair. I only played around with it for less than a month. So take that as subjective. You really have to try them on for size and see which one fits you best.

The Islamic regime's founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, has long called for Israel's destruction. Since my childhood, we were forced to chant "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" daily in school. The regime has funded proxy groups to attack Israelis and Americans, even the civilians of these countries - among others.
We Iranians have exhausted every peaceful option to change this. We elected supposed "moderates" as president, hoping for reform and an end to threats against our own people and the world. Those hopes were shattered as their foreign interventions, proxy wars, and deaths continued. They didn't change even one bit.
We protested peacefully. Repeatedly. And each time, met with bullets. Democrats' policy of negotiation and appeasement only gave it more wiggle room and provided the regime with a lifeline, costing more lives globally and in Iran.
The regime had countless chances to de-escalate and listen to its critics (I mean, us, Iranian people). Instead, it pursued decades of hostility, chanting for war while draining our resources. Now that the conflict has arrived, it blames protesters and the world for it.
We never wanted war. But after the regime massacred thousands of defenseless protestors, including children and the elderly, we had one last hope to resort to: asking for military intervention. It's not a war, it is a rescue operation. People and powers worldwide are uniting against this evil regime.
