To reduce reply spam but still be open to lots of replies, try:

With this, your "writes" will are bigger but fewer. The "reads" are a little smaller, but not community level small. If you try this & still get a lot of bot replies, let me know. We can try other, more restricted ones. Does that make sense?

Like, do you want to reduce spam replies on your notes? Or do you want to leave big relays completely (and not be seen by a portion of the people using them)? Or trim back on data consumption?
I've had a couple people end up disappointed because we went too restricted too quickly 😅 I don't want to do that again, so I'd rather try to tailor this to what you're wanting.

I am confident that if people can discover and explore different ways of browsing variously elevated content, they'll find things that interest them and be able to create their own home feeds and relay sets that resonate, whether that be by topics, personalities, or cooperative tasks. (Or many other possibilities)

Onboarding into the community is still best done through engagement, creating repoire, and getting invited... which can start in any of these feeds. The community can help itself to grow through members engaging in the discovery feeds and contributing to the curation efforts.
I haven't left you a lengthy, nuanced reply in a long time. I hope you'll hop on Jumble or Nosotros and explore these over the course of a few days, maybe give some thought to what I'm presenting here. (Take a break from the AI craziness😉🫂) These are just mine (and only part of what I'm working at creating). Other people have different ideas and different patterns emerging from what they are building, too. Once we figure out a clean way to create sharable little samplers, this is going to be what makes Nostr sticky. I'm sure of it. Following people will be a much better experience when the emphasis on doing so is more aligned with a user's preferences rather than trying to either find needles in the haystack or conceding to what the dominant culture demands.

Zap.cooking is becoming a great example of a topic-specific client, melding topic + community, through relays + filtering.
jumble.imwald.eu has Discussions, which are somewhat reddit-like topic based threads, also accessible through flotilla.social . They are a relay-first design, which is helpful to know when navigating through them on imwald and absolutely necessary to know when viewing them in flotilla.
Relay-based private & public chat groups are getting better, too. Chachi.chat is set up to organize multiple types of posts. The main chat is accessible across all other group chat clients, too, like flotilla, so participants aren't tied to one client, for most of the activity.
This stuff is getting better. Part of what's lacking is patient, explorative, maybe less-techie people willing to participate and set up groups & the relays to host them, so this stuff can be improved further.
