I have used BlueWallet in the past and that's been pretty well most of the time. It wasn't 100% reliable, but when it failed, I had a backup plan: coinos (custodial, web-based) and that worked. Had that also failed, I would have paid in cash, which is the ultimate failesafe. 😝

The only good review is an honest review. It did not go smoothly, but that may be my fault, at least in part. First, it failed. I manually bumped up the fee and retried. It failed again. A third time, this time also selecting the first hop. It acted like it was going to work, but just hung at the sending screen. The cash register timed out, then Zeus timed out. I tried again from the register, scanned the new QR code, selected the first hop, cranked the fee way up, and it sailed through exactly as I'd have liked to have seen the first time. In the end, I believe the core issue was the default fee being too low. I just checked my settings and it was set to 0 sats, 0%, so it looks like these failures may have been my fault. I've adjusted these to reasonable numbers and will continue to report back as I use the wallet with real world transactions. Shout out to nostr:nprofile1qqszmxrnkfdl9hdxzstgf4zdt6mk4avlzemc3fvwxcatzeclalhg0uspz4mhxue69uhkummnw3ezummcw3ezuer9wchszxnhwden5te0wdjkuerfwshxummnvekxzun99e3k7mf0qy08wumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttsw43zuam9d3kx7unyv4ezumn9wshslde55f for putting in the work and helping people on social media when they have issues. 🤙

About $250. Plus I think the miners go for about $100. All in all, $350 total but with no solar tracking and no graceful miner shutdown/resume. You could probably rig up a relay between the battery and the miner that would be held shut by the battery, then when the battery voltage drops too low, it'd open the circuit. Oh snaps. I just realized the solarbit €600 solar bit doesn't include the solar panels, battery, metal frame or miner! Now I understand why you called it expensive! Well shit man, want to go into business making kits that are less exppensive and include all the parts except batteries (b/c it simply doesn't make sense to ship big heavy batteries)? We could open source the design and let people choose to DIY or buy something from is that is ready to rock.

OK, so that's 30W constant draw, which means 720Wh per day. If we assume we get 8 hours of full sun per day, which is reasonable if you have a fixed angle on your panels and not a sun-tracking system, that means you need to have 3x that power to go 24/7. That's too much power for lithium batteries to make sense, go with a deep cell lead acid. You'll want the following: Solar panels (2160 W minumum) Charge controller Battery (60Ah @ 12V minimum) Voltage regulator (12V -> 5V @ 6A) You can get a pair of 3A buck converters for voltage regulation and run them in parallel if necessary. If you want to be able to tolerate cloudy days you'll need more battery capacity. If you want to tolerate winters, you'll need more solar generation capacity. If you don't want to completely run your battery into the ground every day, you should get at least 20% more than the minimum. I tbink that about sums it up. Deep cell marine batteries are available at your local auto store. Everything else will probably come from the internet. I'll let you do the lrice shopping.

$300 + a grinder to make the failed prints into pellets + time and labor. Or that same $300 buys about 15 rolls of filament. Plus it would seldom get used because most of my designs avoid supports so they don't have as many failed prints. It's just the prorotyping. I feel like this could make sense for a larger community though. If everyone in town was donating their scraps and empty spools, grind the scraps they bring in, and were willing to pay $10/roll of low quality filament, it could potentally be sustainable. The operating expenses would mainly be the person's time, power, and replacement parts. I'll bring it up to my local makerspace and see if we can do a fund drive. But that's going to have to go on the back burner for now, because I don't have time to research grinders, and come up with a plan that will show that I can take this from a dream to a practical reality, that it will be sustainable, etc.

I finally moved the last of the mulch off the driveway. We finally managed to get enough places weeded and ready for mulch, that we could put it where it goes and the remainer fit into buckets. 17 buckets to be exact, but we've got that capacity. Transplanted some ferns while I was at it too. And filled the remaining empty buckets with rice hulls. That's exciting because it was enough to allow us to move the remaining rice hulls without a forklift (which we don't own) nor a pallet jack (which we also don't own). They have been in the driveway for months because they were just too heavy to move. Haha It feels good to make progress that is so clearly visible. Follow me if you want more yard chore reports, brutally honest reports on lightning software, 3d printing reports, talk about meshtastic, and occassional mentions of nostr:nprofile1qqsf3vs4hphtnaqg6ekqxg3vfkhuhetnrejt696dn6l292jm9rjvntcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qyg8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnddakj7qgawaehxw309ahx7um5wghxy6t5vdhkjmn9wgh8xmmrd9skctc3txfeq. I did and here's what happened. There were some rough spots with broken links when I tried to find documentation for the initial setup. Evan helped me out and said he'd fix the broken link. I was able to find documentation on how to open a channel from my server's lightning node to my Zeus lightning node and that worked. Donation to my local makerspace worked on the first try, and accurately reported that is succeeded (which is not the case with LNBits+LNDHub+BlueWallet which frequently reports failure when the payment went through). Big point in Zeus's favor here. The problem I had with Zeus previously is losing sync with graph/chain data and not being any to use it anymore. I had to close all my channels and recover funds on-chain, and I couldn't even do it with Zeus; I had to use Sparrow. I've seen multiple people I follow state that they had this same problem. My conclusion is that the jury is still out on this one. The new type of node is too limited in functionality for me, but if the embedded LND node really can stay in sync with the graph/chain data, then Zeus will have earned it's reputation as a reliable wallet. For me, reliability is by far the most important feature. If I ever go to make a payment and it fails, there better be a damned good reason (e.g. no internet connection, no path to recipient). If I get wedged into a situation where I have to close all channels and recover my funds via a desktop wallet, I don't expect I'll give Zeus a third try. God, don't let me down! PS if the new Rust-based embedded node reaches feature parity with the embedded LND, I'd like to switch to that. Sending backups to some server somewhere is 100% a deal breaker for me. Maybe I'll be able to switch to that before the embedded LND node gets wedged. 🤣😅😶‍🌫️

Does it fix the stale data/chain sync errors that cause funds to not be available and eventually require using Sparrow Wallet to recover the on-chain funds? I understand it's a hard problem with a device that isn't always, an app that could get backgrounded at any time and so on. But I'm not going to recommend it unless it's extremely reliable. It's absurdly easy to grow in Illinois. I'm told that if you don't contain the roots for 18-24" down, it'll try to take over. A couple buckets with the bottoms cut off will do the trick. We grew some harvested it and then failed to divide/process it and get it back in the ground. It came up the next year anyway because there was apparently some roots that we didn't get when harvesting. I think we just bought some organic horseradish at the grocery store and stuck it in the ground to get started. Hopefully we'll be able to get a harvest this year and actually process it into some food.

All apples processed and the last batch is drying now. $30 + about 4.5 hours of labor for what will be about 4 pounds of apple chips. A little cheaper than commercial apple chips, depending on how I value my time, but more importantly, I know I have the tools and skills to be self sufficient. I can get apples from a local orchard. The local ones are more expensive than the discount ones from the grocery store, but there's no long supply chain. I don't even use gasoline to get there, I can just bike over.

Apples were on sale today, so our monthly grocery budget is now completely shot. The upside is that if I get these all washed cored, sliced, seasoned and dried, we should be set on cinnamon apple chips for the year. 10 lbs down, another 20 lbs to go
